The Diabetes Service assesses and manages children and adolescents with all forms of diabetes mellitus, it is a large, tertiary service with major clinical, research and education roles.

Referring letter from the GP or other specialist to the Endocrinologist by name.

Urgent referrals

For urgent referrals, the referring doctor should contact the Endocrinology Fellow or the Endocrinologist on-call via the switchboard by phoning (02) 9845 0000. Referrals for a new diagnosis of type 1 diabetes or a patient with diabetes who is unwell are always regarded as urgent.

Diabetes Complication Assessment Service (DCAS)

Complication screening allows the detection of very early signs of complications, changes can then be made to management in an attempt to either stop or reverse the complication.

The Diabetes Complications Assessment Service offers a comprehensive assessment of diabetes complications for adolescents with diabetes. The assessment includes retinal photography, estimation of albumin excretion rate and assessment of autonomic and peripheral nervous systems. The service is available to all adolescents in NSW and the ACT who have diabetes for at least two years and for younger children who have had diabetes for at least five years.

Appointments are made by phoning (02) 9845 3156 or (02) 9845 3157. Patients require a referral from their doctor.
