What is nutrition and dietetics?
Nutrition is the process of nourishment, particularly through food and diet, while dietetics is the science of diet and nutrition.
Good nutrition is essential for health growth. It can help prevent disease and promote health.
How do we help people in nutrition and dietetics?
The Department of Nutrition & Dietetics across the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network (SCHN) provides dietetic services to all inpatient units and to specialist outpatient clinics. Our clinicians are routinely involved with allied health, medical teams, nursing staff, children & their families and other support services within the network, advocating the importance of nutrition in patient care. Beyond the network, we work with universities and other teaching and training organisations to educate and support future clinicians in paediatrics. Our clinicians routinely consult with media and other dietitans and health professionals outside the network as required.
Dietitians are available at Sydney Children’s Hospital and The Children's Hospital at Westmead to provide advice on all areas of infant, child and adolescent nutrition. This includes nutritional assessment, management of therapeutic diets and dietary education and counselling.
