The RSS provides specialist services for children who need respiratory support during their sleep.

In order to treat your child effectively, we may need to devise a treatment plan for your child which involves them using a special machine, called a CPAP or Bi-level respiratory support machine, while they sleep.

Security Fees

All devices rented through the RSS require a security bond. This fee (of $100 for machines and $80 for masks) will not be refunded if the machine is not returned, the rental fees are not paid or if the equipment is returned in poor condition.

CPAP machines

The Children's Hospital has a limited supply of CPAP devices and for this reason you will be required to rent or purchase the device from a company (a current list of companies is on the last page of this document). The RSS Scientific Officer or Clinical Nurse Consultant are available to discuss and assist you organising equipment.

CPAP Rental Fees (three months rental is required at a time)

Monthly rental is $50 per month which includes:

  • Rental of a CPAP device
  • Rental of Humidification (where available)
  • Rental of tubing
  • Rental of mask
  • Filters for CPAP/ Bi-level machine

Therefore, initial payment including deposit is $250 (three months rental of $50 per month and $100 refundable deposit)

Bi-level Machines

The Children's Hospital has a limited supply of BiLevel devices and for this reason you will be required to rent or purchase the device from a company (a current list of companies is on the last page of this document). The RSS Scientific Officer or Clinical Nurse Consultant are available to discuss and assist you organising equipment.

Therefore, initial payment including deposit is $400 (three months rental of $100 per month, $100 for mask purchase and $100 refundable deposit)

CPAP/Bi-level Masks

CPAP/ BiLevel masks are available for purchase from the retail outlet centres listed below. Prices for masks vary, so please contact the RSS or your nearest outlet centre for up to date pricing. Some outlet centres may not be able to provide your child with a suitably fitted mask. In this instance you may be eligible to rent a hospital-owned mask.

CPAP/Bi-level Mask Rental Fees (three months rental is required at a time)

Payment assistance

Home Oxygen and Related Products Scheme

Children who require respiratory support therapy long-term can rent the equipment from the RSS for a period of three months. Within this time it is requested that the family organise for the equipment to be supplied through one of the options detailed below:

Families with private health insurance

If your family is not eligible to apply for the Enable HRP and have private health insurance it may be advised that the family purchase the respiratory equipment. Most private health insurers will contribute to the cost for purchasing a new machine for your child.

Repayment scheme

If your family does not have private health care insurance and is not eligible to apply for the Enable HRP it is recommended the respiratory therapy equipment be rented or purchased through a retail outlet centre. If the family chooses to purchase the device most outlet centres accommodate for repayment schemes.

How to pay

Unless otherwise specified, all fees and rental payments for the use of the RSS equipment are to be paid at the Appliance Centre, The Children's Hospital at Westmead.

The Appliance Centre prefers that all fees and rental payments are to be paid via MasterCard or Visa, however cash payments are accepted and EFTPOS is available.

Important information

When you hire equipment through the RSS it is important that you note the following important information:

  • You should ensure that the equipment is well looked after at all times. If repairs are needed from neglect or damage, you will be required to contribute towards the repair costs. Contributing towards repair costs will not entitle you to ownership or part ownership of the equipment and you will not be entitled to any refunds when the equipment is returned.
  • Please report any change of address or telephone number to the Sleep and Respiratory Support Service so your records can be updated.
  • All home respiratory equipment remains the property of the company you hired it from.
  • NSW Health takes no responsibility for any injury sustained through the use of home respiratory equipment issued by The Children's Hospital at Westmead.
  • All patients must undertake regular assessment of their medical need for continuing treatment with home respiratory equipment. The maximum interval between follow-up appointments if you are using our equipment is 1 year. It is also important that patients follow their prescribed treatment carefully and be committed to using the equipment for as long as recommended by your treating physician. This is very important to achieve the best possible treatment outcomes for your child.
