About amino acid formulas
Amino acid formulas (Neocate or Alfamino) are specialised infant formulas that are used for some babies with food allergies or with gastrointestinal problems. The protein in the formula has been broken down into shorter chains or individual amino acids. These formulas are nutritionally similar but are manufactured by different companies.
Amino acid formulas are prescribed by a consultant allergist or clinical immunologist, paediatric gastroenterologist or paediatrician, or family doctors in consultation with a consultant allergist, clinical immunologist or paediatric gastroenterologist. An authority script is required to purchase these formulas at the PBS subsidised price.
These formulas may not taste as good as breast milk or standard formula, but babies already drinking an amino acid formula are likely to accept a different brand easily.
Changing from one amino acid formula to another
Tips for switching or changing brands
Ensure you follow the instructions on the tin for making up the formula. Scoop sizes vary between brands.
Here are some ideas to help make the switch:
- Offer the formula when the baby is really hungry or very sleepy.
- Offer it repeatedly over the course of several days.
- Offer formula in preference to food for a few days so your baby needs to drink to be satisfied.
- Remain calm, it takes patience by the person feeding the baby to encourage them to accept the new taste.
- It is important to record how much formula the baby takes in a day until they are taking adequate amounts.
Tips for improving the taste
For babies and infants:
- Add 1-2 drops vanilla essence (non-alcoholic) to each feed. Gradually reduce the amount of flavouring 2-3 days after they are drinking it well.
- Add ½ teaspoon golden syrup or maple syrup per 100ml. Do not use honey. Gradually reduce the amount of flavouring 2-3 days after the baby is drinking it well.
For older infants/children:
- Chill the formula
- Serve in a covered cup
- Give your child a straw to use.
