Hundreds celebrate community day as Westmead’s new building nears opening

New building at Westmead

Curiosity and excitement filled The Children’s Hospital at Westmead (CHW) on Saturday 21 February, as patients, families and staff toured the new 14‑storey building, which is set to open in coming months.

More than 350 people streamed through the doors for the ‘Partner and Community Day’ to see how the new facilities will enhance care for children and young people across NSW.

The event was a moment to celebrate all who have helped bring the building to life, including staff, patient families, project teams, architects and builders.

Redevelopment Program Director, Cassie Hainsworth said the day was a powerful reminder of who the building is for.

“Seeing many families who have watched the building go from ground up, and others who are new to the hospital community tour through these spaces for the first time was incredibly moving,” she said.

“Every room has been shaped by the ideas, experiences and hopes of families and staff. This building truly belongs to them.”

The day began with a smoking ceremony and Welcome to Country by Dharug Elder Uncle Colin Locke, whose guidance has supported the project team throughout the build.

Staff led guided tours, answering questions about new technology and equipment, and sharing insights into how the new facilities will support better experiences for patients and families.

Alongside the tours, families enjoyed hands‑on activities such as a scavenger hunt, art stations and didgeridoo playing, that brought colour and creativity to the day.

Visitors took in the building’s light‑filled design, artwork and welcoming spaces, all shaped through extensive consultation with the hospital community.

With Partner and Community Day complete, staff will continue to prepare for the building’s opening. Clinical teams are undertaking simulation and training programs, equipment testing and furniture deliveries to ensure a smooth transition for patients and families.

More details on the building’s opening will be announced in coming weeks.

The new building has been delivered by Health Infrastructure in partnership with the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, building contractor Roberts Co Sycne Advisory and Billard Leece Partnership. Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation has made significant philanthropic contributions to the project.
