Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program (BIRP) at Rehab2Kids Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick

The Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program (BIRP) at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick provides a multidisciplinary inpatient, day rehabilitation and outpatient service to children and young people who have an acquired brain injury. While longer term intervention may be provided by local services (closer to your home), our team is available to provide specialist support and education to therapy teams across the state.

The BIRP team works with children from the acute phase of their injury through rehabilitation and transition from hospital to home.

The multidisciplinary brain injury rehabilitation team includes health professionals from the following clinical areas:

  • Case management
  • Clinical psychology
  • Neuropsychology
  • Occupational therapy
  • Paediatric rehabilitation medical specialist
  • Physiotherapy
  • Social work
  • Speech pathology

Inpatient rehabilitation services are provided by medical, nursing and allied health professionals on the wards, working closely with other specialist teams that may be involved with your child (e.g. neurosurgery, neurology etc.)

Day rehabilitation services are also provided by a multidisciplinary team.

A follow up medical appointment will be arranged approximately 6-8 weeks after your child returns home from hospital. Outpatient clinics are held several times a week offering a multidisciplinary approach to assessment and rehabilitation planning. Regular follow up with our team may also be offered through our outpatient service.

To refer a patient, please fax a doctor’s referral to 02 9382 0177.

Please make the referral out to Dr Adrienne Epps, Senior Staff Specialist, outlining contact details, condition, and any other relevant medical information. This referral will then be triaged by the treating doctor.

A current referral is required for all appointments with the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Clinic. For subsequent appointments you may need to renew your referrals with your referring doctor.
