Early Childhood Health services

Our service cares for new parents and babies in the community following discharge from maternity services.

The service is free-of-charge and made up of a team of expert Child and Family Health nurses from Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, who monitor the growth and development of children from birth to 5 years. Clinics are held in early Childhood Centres in the community with a Child and Family nurse. Locations and times are listed below.

Our nurses offer parent information on many topics including: child health and development, practical parenting tips, nutrition, breastfeeding, sleep and settling, communication, play and safety, nutrition, oral health, postnatal depression, fathering, balancing work and family life, play, injury prevention, SIDS and immunisation.

Remember, if your child was born overseas or interstate you can obtain a copy of the Personal Health Record from the Better Health Centre (02) 9887 5450 bhc@nsccahs.health.nsw.gov.au

Development checks

You will receive your child's personal health record, also known as the Blue Book, from the maternity hospital at the time of your child's birth. The Blue Book contains the recommended schedule of health checks for your child that can be carried out by the Child and Family Health service, as well as other information including your child's immunisation record.

The Child and Family Health Service offer child health and development checks at the following recommended ages:

  • 1-4 weeks
  • 6-8 weeks
  • 6 months
  • 12 months
  • 18 months
  • 2 years
  • 3 years
  • 4 years

The checks are important as babies grow rapidly and minor difficulties can become serious health or developmental problems if left. Prior to each health check, it is important to complete the parent's assessment questions appropriate to your child's age. This will assist the nurse to provide the most appropriate care and advice for you and your child.

Outside of these scheduled health checks if you have any worries or concerns that you would like to discuss with a Child & Family health nurse you can attend a drop-in session at one of our clinics.

To make an appointment for any Blue Book health check, please call 02 9382 0933.

New parents groups

These groups are for first-time parents with babies aged 0-8 weeks, held at the Early Childhood Health Centres over a four-week period. Please discuss with the nurse when you are seen for your 1-4 week check to book in.

Breastfeeding support groups

These groups are for families of any age baby who are experiencing difficulties with breastfeeding. General feeding advice and support is available at all our clinics.

Due to the unpredictable nature of feeding problems we don't offer regular appointment times for these sessions. Instead, we offer a drop-in service, so it's possible that you will have a short wait before being seen.
