The Medical Day Unit provides specialist medical and nursing care to paediatric patients, on a day-stay basis. The MDU is available to provide medical review, follow-up treatment and investigations, allowing patients to return home instead of being admitted to hospital.
The MDU operates on an appointment basis only and requires a referral from your child's treating doctor.
Treatment and Observation
Following review by the MDU team, your child may be kept in the Unit for short term observation and treatment. Treatment such as intravenous antibiotics and fluids can be given in the MDU, under the observation of our specialist team, without the need for a full hospital admission. Children whose condition improves sufficiently will then be manages at home with the support of the MDU team.
The MDU provides wound care, dressing changes and suture removal in a child friendly environment when referred by the Emergency Department (ED) or your local doctor. Wound care is usually conducted during weekday appointments, however you may be asked to attend the MDU on the weekend if your child's wound requires more frequent dressing or review.
If appropriate, a review over the phone by specialist medical staff may be organised by your child's doctor in the ED.
Making an Appointment
If your child presented to Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick ED with an acute illness that requires follow-up treatment or review, an appointment will be made for review in the MDU prior to discharge from the ED.
If you are unsure of your appointment time please phone the MDU on (02) 9382 0223.
