Nuclear medicine services at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick (SCH) are provided by the Prince of Wales Hospital (POWH) Nuclear Medicine Department as part of a service sharing agreement.

The Nuclear Medicine Department provide a number of scanning services to children and adolescents who are admitted via Emergency or who are receiving treatment for a known medical condition. These include bone, kidney, heart, gallium, hepato-biliary, gastrointestinal, lung, thyroid, CSF and brain scans.

Using very low levels of radiation, nuclear medicine specialists are able to take high resolution images of a child’s bones and internal organs, to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of various health conditions such as cancer, kidney and brain disorders.

A  PET scanner machine is located in the Nuclear Medicine Department and can greatly assist in the early diagnosis, treatment and management of cancers and conditions affecting the brain and heart.
