The team in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) care for more than 1,000 critically ill and injured children every year.
Children in the PICU often require respiratory support with ventilators, and may also need a variety of other therapies including high dose pain relief, circulatory support (ECMO), kidney dialysis, and specialised monitoring.
Due to the severity of their illness or injury, children in the PICU receive a much higher level of nursing and medical care. This ensures that any change in a child’s condition is monitored and treated quickly.
The PICU provides:
- Comprehensive level 6 children's intensive care
- Clinical care for very sick infants and children
- Consultative service.
