Signs of a tired child

Some signs of tiredness in your child are easy to spot, like yawning, looking drowsy, or rubbing their eyes. Others can be more subtle and harder to notice.

Signs of a tired child include:

  • yawning
  • rubbing their eyes
  • staring blankly for long periodssucking fingers or hands
  • becoming more irritable or upset
  • moving more slowly or with jerking movements
  • crying
  • fussy eating
  • becoming overly attached to parents and carers
  • losing interest in activities or toys.

Younger children can become overtired if they miss a nap, go to bed too late, or have unsettled sleep.

Signs of overtiredness in younger children include:

  • sudden bursts of energy or hyperactivity
  • tantrums
  • aggression over small changes
  • resisting sleep or bedtime despite being very tired.

Knowing and responding to your child’s tired signs early can help them settle more easily. This helps them get the quality sleep they need to grow, learn, and thrive.
