Food exploration

Babies first foods are breastmilk or infant formula, which usually taste sweet. This can lead to a preference for bland, sweet foods, especially if the introduction of solids is delayed.

Mealtimes engage four of the five senses:

  • sight
  • smell
  • touch
  • taste.

The look, feel, and smell of food all influence a child’s willingness to try new things. Allowing babies to explore different textures, colours, and flavours through their senses can make mealtimes more enjoyable and help reduce fussy eating.

It’s normal for a child to enjoy a food one day and reject it the next. Regularly offering a variety of new and familiar foods helps expand their diet and encourages healthy eating habits.

Food neophobia

Many children are wary of new foods, and up to 30% refuse to try them. However, with time and repeated exposure, most children can learn to enjoy a wider variety of foods.
