Cardiac Services Announcement
The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network is moving forward to implement the cardiac services model of care, following recommendations from the NSW Paediatric Cardiac Services Panel.
The Panel recommended that cardiac services for children and young people in New South Wales should be delivered under a ‘one service, one team’ approach.
The Panel’s work was informed by the development of a state-wide model of care for paediatric cardiac services as well as a comprehensive literature and data review conducted by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons.
Under the ‘one service, one team’ approach:
- the paediatric cardiac service will be delivered as one service by one team across the two hospital sites – The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick
- paediatric cardiac services will be recognised as a state-wide service, with seamless care for all children accessing the service regardless of where they live
- robust data collection and analysis is required for the ongoing development of paediatric cardiac services to guide and shape any future models of care
A core group comprising parents and carers of cardiac patients and CHW, SCH and rural clinicians will drive the redesign process. SCHN Executive Director of Clinical Operations, Dr Joanne Ging, is leading the work.
