Happy Birthday Bear Cottage!
Precious, inspirational, beautiful. These are some of the ways Bear Cottage is described by the staff, patients and families that contribute to making it the special place that it is.
More than 20 years ago, Dr John Yu and Dr Michael Stevens from The Children's Hospital at Westmead saw a need for increased options and support for palliative care patients, and so Bear Cottage came to fruition. Officially opened in 2001, Bear Cottage has been a lifeline for children and families who are experiencing the unimaginable.
For two incredible decades, the devoted and passionate staff and volunteers have cared for thousands of children with life-limiting illnesses, providing a home away from home when they and their families need it the most.
As the only dedicated children's hospice in NSW, Bear Cottage goes above and beyond in caring for and supporting families. Children are provided with excellence in paediatric care, while staying with their family in a non-hospital like environment.
To mark Bear Cottage's 20th birthday, staff, volunteers and families celebrated with a bear-y fitting birthday bash, complete with balloons and a cake featuring Bandaged Bear.
The birthday celebrations also provided an opportunity to celebrate and remember the courage, strength and bravery of each and every child and family member who have visited Bear Cottage.
Here's to another brilliant 20 years. Happy Birthday Bear Cottage!
