Art competition adds "Pop of Colour" to hospital

"Banana?" No, it's not a question but rather the name of Alex Kim's eye-catching artwork.

The incredible drawing of a monkey being offered a banana blew judges away in this year's Youth Arts Competition, earning Alex the impressive, and well-deserved, title of "Overall Winner" at just 13 years of age.

Alex was one of 107 artists who entered the 13th annual art competition at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. The theme, "A Pop of Colour", encouraged artists to create artworks in shades of black, grey and white with a vibrant pops of colour.

Artworks were entered in three age categories; children under 12, young people 12-18, and adults aged over 18 years, with winners announced for each as well as the award for overall winner.

Michelle Mathyi, Youth Arts Co-ordinator, said judging this year's competition was challenging due to the high-caliber of talent.

"Picking our winning entries from each age category was a very hard decision. There was such a high level of artistic skill demonstrated as well as much creativity across all entries," Michelle said.

"We have already had so many people stopping to view the artworks and marveling at the creativity and talents of our entrants, and it's true - their artworks are all exceptional."

Other winners included Utsavi Thacker, whose curious three 'Cheeky Emus' took out top prize in the children's category, Anvesha Bhushan, who was awarded Youth Winner for her detailed portrait of the famous actress, Audrey Hepburn and Jasmine Suffling, who was announced as the winner of the Adult category for her beautifully illustrated artwork 'Growth and Bloom'.

"The artworks have put many smiles on faces and help give patients a moment of happiness during their hospital stay," Michelle said.

All of the entered artworks are currently being exhibited in the level 1 corridor, near Adolescent Medicine, and will remain on display until July 2022.
