This year's topic is Acute brain Inflammation: what not to miss.
Acute inflammation of the brain (and less commonly the spinal cord) is a serious and often stressful condition to manage.
Navigating the diagnostic pathway is discussed. The first session looks at different presentations of brain inflammation and highlights clues to diagnoses, approach to investigations, treatment and follow up in the paediatric clinic.
The second session focuses on several aspects of epilepsy diagnosis and management. Approaches to first seizure presentations—including both febrile and afebrile seizures—are discussed. Seizure syndromes in early-middle childhood will be considered, with general principles of treatment and update on relevant genes and novel/targeted therapies.
The afternoon sessions will be case-based and interactive focusing on the evaluation of clinical signs, diagnosis and management including benign, functional and organic causes of abnormal behaviour, eye movements, gait, jerks and gyrations.
The symposium is suitable for general paediatricians, paediatric neurologists, paediatric trainees, general practitioners, psychologists, nursing and allied health staff.
Fellows of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (RACP) can claim points based on their hours of participation through the myCPD self-reporting program.
