Types of surgery admissions
This is an information page. Please contact your doctor or health professional about your specific admission instructions before coming to hospital.
Your admission to hospital will be different depending on the type of surgery your child is having.
Your doctor will let you know the arrangements for your child’s admission to hospital before the surgery.
Pre-admission
A pre-admission clinic or appointment is your hospital appointment before the surgery.
You and your child will talk about the surgery with a member of the surgical team. You will be able to ask questions about the surgery and make plans for after the surgery.
The doctor may need to conduct a clinical assessment, where they examine your child. This may include some tests (like blood tests or x-rays).
Day admission
Day admission or day only admission is when your child is admitted to hospital to have surgery and go home on the same day.
Day only admission causes less disruption to your normal activities and also reduces the chance infections or blood clots after surgery.
Overnight admission
Overnight admission or day of surgery admission is when your child is admitted to hospital to have surgery on the same day, but will stay in hospital after the surgery, at least overnight.
