Ordering your child's meals
Our hospitals provide onsite meal preparation for patients with a focus on fresh and healthy ingredients.
Patients aged 13 and older can order meals independently. Patients under 13 must have a parent or carer place the order.
The menu offered for your child will be suitable for their dietary requirements. For some complex diets, Allied Health Assistants will assist in making the order.
If you don’t place an order, a meal that is suitable to your child’s dietary needs will be provided.
Carer meals are available for mothers of inpatients who are breastfeeding or expressing, or parents or carers of inpatients in isolation. Talk to your nurse or Allied Health Assistant if you need a parent/carer meal. Please note, carer meals follow a set menu and there are no selection options available.
Bringing food into the hospital for your child?
- Never give food or drink to your child if there is a ‘Nil by Mouth’ or ‘NBM’ notice on the bed. This could be dangerous for your child.
- Please inform the nursing staff – they will make sure it does not interfere with your child’s diet or treatment plan.
- Please do not give food or drink to any child other than your own.

Menus are customised to meet individual dietary requirements, including special diets such as Halal or egg‑free meals. Please let nursing staff know if your child has any specific dietary needs or allergies.
Meals are delivered the day after at scheduled times. In addition to main meals, we also deliver a mid‑meal trolley to most wards between meals.
Ward pantries are also stocked with a range of food and drinks, such as flavoured milk, juice, biscuits, crackers, bread and spreads.
