About our service
Your child's doctor may prescribe medication for your child through the hospital's pharmacy service.
In some cases, medications are provided for families on an ongoing basis.
Others will be given prescriptions to purchase medications from other chemists or pharmacies.
A public chemist/pharmacy is located in the hospital foyer for the convenience of families and visitors.
Pharmacy services
Compounding
Pharmacy will prepare special mixtures, creams etc as these are easier for children to use than available adult dose forms.
All preparations are compounded according to principles of Good Manufacturing Practice.
We need minimum three business days notice for medication orders so we can ensure patients have the medication they need on time.
Drug information service
The drug information service provides general medication information for parents carers at the hospital.
Discharge medication
When patients leave the hospital, they will be given a small supply of the medication prescribed by their doctor.
If you child needs to continue the medication, you will need to take a prescription to your local chemist or pharmacy.
Outpatient prescriptions and charges
Medication supply for public and private patients
The pharmacy can provide one month's supply of prescribed medications each time.
If your child goes to an outpatient clinic as a public patient, they will receive one month's supply and two repeats prescriptions (as per NSW Health Policy Directive PD2009).
If your child goes to an outpatient clinic as a private patient, you will need to take their prescriptions to your local chemist or pharmacy, unless the medication is only available through the hospital.
Prescriptions with repeats will be held on file in the pharmacy until required/finished.
Patients from country areas
Patients from country areas will be given up to three months medication supply (stock allowing) and their repeat prescriptions will be couriered to them via TNT if they are not attending the hospital again within the appropriate time.
Other requirements
Other requirements, such as authorities for special drugs (antibiotic approvals, SAS, S100 or Drug Committee approval) must be completed and current before outpatient medication can be supplied.
Charges
- General patients: $41.00 per one month supply
- Health Care and Concession Card holders: $6.60 per one month supply, your Concession Card will need to be verified each time
- Safety Net Entitlement Card holders: no charge
Medication charges are determined by the Department of Health and are reviewed annually.
