Skin conditions (dermatology)

What are skin conditions?

Allergies, irritants, your genetic makeup and certain diseases and immune system problems can cause skin conditions.

Some skin conditions are relatively minor to diagnose and treat, but others can be more complex.

Dermatology is the branch of medicine that deals with skin conditions, as well as problems with hair and nails.

You can read more about treating common skin problems in our fact sheets.

How do we help children who have a skin condition?

Dermatology services provide comprehensive care for infants and children with rare and complex skin problems that usually require multidisciplinary care (such as vascular anomalies and epidermolysis bullosa) in a hospital setting.

The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network maintains a referral dermatology service at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. Dermatology is an outpatients and consultative specialty providing services mainly for referrals but also to the local community. Services operate within a comprehensive multidisciplinary team based model of care.
