The twin cranes supporting delivery of the $658 million Sydney Children’s Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre project are now fondly known as “Jupiter” and “Andy” – cleverly named by two young people the new hospital will support.
Hosted by Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick and the redevelopment project team, the Name the Cranes competition called on the hospital community to propose names for the cranes that currently tower over the redevelopment construction site.
Dozens of entries were received, with submissions assessed by a judging panel consisting of hospital and project team staff, as well as community members. The two winners were determined based on the creativity, originality and symbolism of their suggested names.
Ari, aged 6, and Andy, aged 3, were the lucky winners, each taking home an iPad generously donated by principal contractor John Holland Group, and acknowledged at an official naming ceremony and community fun day, celebrating the contribution of all competition participants.
Tim Hoffmann, Director of Redevelopment at Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, said the naming of the cranes was a fun way to engage younger members of the hospital community and spread the word about the exciting hospital redevelopment project.
“Congratulations to our winners and a big thank you to everyone who participated. We had some great name suggestions and creative skills displayed and it was encouraging to see so much interest in the hospital redevelopment project,” Mr Hoffmann said.
“Signage displaying the winning names and some of the creative drawings entered will soon be proudly displayed on the construction site for all to see and admire, and the towering cranes will be a feature of the Randwick skyline for the next 12 months as the new building takes shape.” “Jupiter” and “Andy” will soar a splendid 75 and 85 metres high when they reach full height, can each lift up to 20 tonnes up close and will remain on site as construction continues.
The $658 million Sydney Children’s Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre is being delivered by Health Infrastructure, in partnership with the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, Children’s Cancer Institute and UNSW Sydney, and will bring world-leading clinical care, research and education together under one roof to transform kids’ health through integrated research and care.
The project team is working together to provide a new state-of-the-art paediatric health and research facility; that will be flexible and technologically advanced to drive health care, research and education innovations and enhance paediatric health care locally, nationally and globally.
