Burns awareness toolkit

The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network has worked with our clinicians to produce the following resources to be shared.  Every year we see over 500 children present to the hospitals with scalds or contact burn injuries. Over 50% of these children being aged 2 or under.

Help us spread our message that burns can happen in seconds but can last a lifetime.  Taking preventative measures and applying immediate and correct first aid, can help make a difference to keep children healthy, safe and out of hospital.

The below social media resources are available to be posted freely on the social media profiles of community organisations. This includes schools, daycares, medical clinics, public health networks and community centres.

June is Burns Awareness month! šŸ”„ Ā

Burns can leave more than just a mark on children. They can have lasting effects on physical, social, emotional and mental health.

Immediate and correct right first aid is vital. The only effective treatment is 20 minutes of cool running water. This can reduce the severity of a burn and can improve a child’s chance of a quick recovery.

Did you spot them all? Comment how many burns hazards you found.

Young children are curious, and often little hands touch and grab at hot objects.

Accidental burns from hot liquids, food, or steam are the most common cause of burns in children. Ā Burns can be serious, but the risk can be reduced. ā˜•

If your child suffers a burn: Ā

🚿 Apply cool running water to the area for 20 minutes to cool the skin and stop the burning process.
šŸ’ŽIf possible, remove clothing, nappies or jewellery near the burn.Ā
