Appointment before surgery
Many children will be well enough to stay at home until their surgery and will be admitted to hospital on the day of the procedure.
You’ll have an appointment with your child’s cardiac surgeon to discuss the surgery. For outpatients, this will be arranged by the surgeon’s private office. For inpatients, it will be arranged on the ward.
Children already in other hospitals will be transferred to our hospital for surgery. The timing of this transfer will be coordinated between the hospitals.
Surgery date and pre admission
Your child’s surgeon will schedule the surgery date and make all necessary arrangements. Your child may need to attend the Cardiac Preadmission Clinic the Friday before the surgery for pre-operative tests and consultations.
If your child is already in hospital when the surgery is required, pre-operative tests and investigations will be conducted during their admission, so they won’t need to visit the Cardiac Preadmission Clinic.
After surgery
After surgery, children and infants are usually taken to PICU. If your child is in another area before surgery, please make sure all belongings are packed before they are taken to the operating theatre
