About our service
A cleft lip or palate develops during the early stages of pregnancy, when gaps in a baby's face and mouth structures don't close as they should. This causes problems with feeding and speech as the child develops.
The Cleft Lip and Palate service provides:
- consultative and management services for cleft lip and palate patients
- early post natal consultation
- management of early feeding
- investigation of possible causation and genetic advice (through the Genetic Clinic).
Our team works together with families to plan surgery and follow up for cleft conditions. Speech pathology and orthodontic review is provided with treatment when required.
The Australian Government provides Medicare benefits for children with cleft palate conditions.
