About our service
The Gastroenterology department provides inpatient and outpatient service for:
- general gastroenterology
- inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
- hepatology
- liver transplant
- cystic fibrosis
- non-CF pancreatic disease
- clinical nutrition
- parenteral nutrition
- developmental disability associated dysphagia for children within NSW.
Our service delivery includes patients with liver disease and/or requiring liver transplantation from the ACT and Western Australia.
We are also the paediatric arm of the Australian National Liver Transplant Unit, the largest centre in Australia for children needing liver transplantation.
Children with liver disease are sometimes cared for by other hospitals then referred to The Children's Hospital at Westmead when transplant becomes necessary. Children come from SA, WA and ACT to receive life-saving transplants at The Children's Hospital at Westmead.
Liver transplant involves the transplantation of a donated organ or, where no donor match can be found, a partial transplant from a living donor (such as a family member).
Referral process for clinicians
Our department is using Consultmed to manage referrals. The Consultmed platform allows health professionals to send e-referrals to us securely.
Tertiary referral service, to Paediatricians only. Referrals from GPs will only be accepted in exceptional cases.

Referral and appointment process for parents and carers
Request a referral
To make an appointment at our clinic, you will need a referral. Our service is primarily a tertiary referral service, to Paediatricians only. Referrals from GPs will only be accepted in exceptional cases.
Referrals are accepted up to a child's 16th birthday.
Track your referral
Our department uses Consultmed to manage referrals. Your referring clinician sends the e-referral to us using the secure Consultmed platform.
Once we receive the referral, we will send you an email with your tracking information. We will update you as we process the referral and book your appointment.
To receive these updates, please ask your referring clinician to include your email on the referral.
All referrals will be triaged and some may be declined due to our inability to satisfy demand. The referring doctor will be advised directly. For many clinical problems prior assessment by a general paediatrician is preferred.
If your clinician has questions about Consultmed or require technical support, they can contact helpdesk@consultmed.co.
Need support?
If you need help or have questions about the referral and appointment process, please contact us.

If your child is unwell
If your child is unwell with cough, cold, runny nose or flu–like symptoms please take them to the GP or the Emergency Department for review. You will need to call ahead.
However, if your child has a fever greater than 38 degrees and has a central venous access device, they should present to ED as per usual management.
Your child’s medical team will be contacted on arrival to ED as required.
