Newborn sleep

Learning about your newborn’s sleep patterns can feel both exciting and challenging.

In the early months, sleep plays a big part in helping your baby grow, develop, and stay healthy.

Understanding your baby’s sleep needs, creating a calm sleep space, and building gentle routines are all important for healthy sleep. Every baby is different, and as you get to know your little one, you’ll find a rhythm that helps them feel safe, settled, and ready to rest.

Sleeping well at night and napping during the day gives your baby more energy and supports healthy growth and development.

Newborns don’t know the difference between day and night yet, so they sleep at different times throughout a 24-hour period.

The Australian Department of Health sleep recommendations for babies

  • Birth to 3 months: 14 to 17 hours of good quality sleep every 24-hours, including naps
  • 4 to 11 months: 12 to 16 hours of good quality sleep every 24-hours, including naps
