Harvest and farm injuries

In Australia, 15% of farm injuries are children under 15 years old, and 1 in 10 farm deaths are a child. These are numbers that are too high.

An injury or death of a child is a tragedy nobody wants to see.  Kids are lucky to live, learn and grow up on the farm but it’s important they learn safe practices from an early age. When the home is on the farm and the backyard blends into the work zone, extra precautions need to be taken to prevent children from serious accidents.

Keep kids safe during harvest season:

  • create child safe designated areas and exclusion zones, especially when using machinery.
  • if children are allowed to ride on farm machinery or equipment ensure the appropriate restraints are used.
  • teach children and teenagers to remain vigilant and not to become complacent with safety.
  • never use cattle tags in place of seat belts
  • role-model safe behaviours for children and young people.
