About our service

The medical day unit (MDU) provides specialist medical and nursing care to paediatric patients, on a day-stay basis.

The MDU provides medical review, follow-up treatment and investigations, allowing patients to return home instead of being admitted to hospital.

For children who present to our Emergency Department with an acute illness requiring follow-up treatment or review, we will make an appointment for you in the MDU before being discharged from the ED.

The MDU operates on an appointment basis only and requires a referral from your child's treating doctor.

Referral process for clinicians

Our department is using Consultmed to manage referrals. The Consultmed platform allows health professionals to send e-referrals to us securely.

Referral and appointment process for parents and carers

Request a referral

To make an appointment at our clinic, you will need a referral from your GP, paediatrician or specialist.

They will assess your child, discuss your concerns, and make a referral to the appropriate service.

Track your referral

Our department uses Consultmed to manage referrals. Your referring clinician sends the e-referral to us using the secure Consultmed platform.

Once we receive the referral, we will send you an email with your tracking information. We will update you as we process the referral and book your appointment.

To receive these updates, please ask your referring clinician to include your email on the referral.

If your clinician has questions about Consultmed or require technical support, they can contact helpdesk@consultmed.co.

Our services

Treatment and observation

Following review by the MDU team, your child may stay in our unit for short time for observation and treatment.

We provide treatment such as intravenous antibiotics and fluids under the observation of our specialist team, without the need for a full hospital admission.

Once your child has improved, they can go home with the support of the MDU team.

Wound care

The MDU provides wound care, dressing changes and suture removal in a child friendly environment when referred by the Emergency Department (ED) or your local doctor.

Wound care is usually conducted during weekday appointments, however you may be asked to attend the MDU on the weekend if your child's wound requires more frequent dressing or review.

Phone Support

If appropriate, a review over the phone by specialist medical staff may be organised by your child's doctor in the ED.
