Introduction

The MRI Practice Program uses a play-based approach with a mock MRI scanner to familiarise children with the MRI procedure.

About the MRI Practice Program

This program helps the Child Life Therapy team determine if a child can have an MRI without needing general anaesthesia (GA). Since MRIs are safe and painless, it’s important for the child to stay as still as possible during the scan to avoid GA.

The MRI Practice Program uses a mock MRI scanner in a play-based setting to simulate the MRI experience. This helps Child Life Therapists assess if a child is ready for a non-GA MRI and create personalised care plans to ensure the child can undergo the MRI without anaesthesia.

MRI Practice Program features

Play session

The play session introduces children to the MRI environment in a fun, engaging way. They interact with a toy MRI machine, participate in medical play, and learn about the MRI process, including any necessary procedures like cannulation for contrast.

Tailored to each child’s needs, the session uses an MRI prep photo book to visually explain what will happen during the practice and the actual scan, helping to reduce anxiety and build comfort.

What's that sound

During the practice procedure, children are introduced to the noise of an MRI machine which can be loud and overwhelming in a confined space.

Children listen to recordings of these sounds through headphones or ear protection, allowing them to get used to the noise in a low-pressure setting. This helps them feel more comfortable and reduces anxiety about the actual MRI procedure.

Simulator

The simulator replicates the MRI experience without the need for an actual scan. Children practice entering and lying inside the mock MRI machine, experiencing the sensations and positioning they will encounter during the real procedure.

This hands-on approach helps ease any fears. Laying still is all that's required.

Coping strategies

The program teaches children various coping strategies to handle the MRI experience. Techniques such as deep breathing, visualisation, and distraction are introduced to help manage anxiety and encourage relaxation. These strategies empower children to feel more in control during the actual scan.

We create a plan with coping strategies to best suit your child, considering their needs, personality, triggers and previous experience. A visit can be arranged to view the real MRI machine.

Support

Support throughout the MRI practice program is provided by trained professionals who understand how to work with children. They offer encouragement, answer questions, and ensure that each child feels comfortable and prepared.

This supportive environment is crucial for easing any fears and building confidence. You can stay with your child the duration of the scan and we'll discuss any MRI screening safety.
