About our service
Medical imaging, also known as radiology or diagnostic imaging, uses non-invasive imaging methods to help doctors to diagnose and treat your child’s illness.
We use X-rays, CT scan (CAT scan or Computed Tomography), MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) and ultrasound to produce images of the body. We interpret the images and send the report to your child’s doctor.
We're skilled at addressing your child's needs; our child-friendly waiting room has plenty of toys to entertain, and our technicians are savvy with the scared, the squirmy, and the very sick.
Our radiologists undertake specific training in the diagnosis of children’s illness and have the know-how to obtain the best diagnostic images.

Directions to medical imaging
The department is on level 2 of the Hospital. Find us by following these directions:
- enter through the main Hospital entrance doors (level 2, Diagnostics building)
- walk through the Galleria keeping the stairs on your right
- turn left at the chemist and follow the corridor to the next intersection
- cross over the glass walkway into the Medical Imaging Department.

Dr Tamara Nowland MBBS FRANZCR
Biography
Dr Tamara Nowland completed her medical degree at the University of Sydney. She then undertook her Radiology training at Concord Hospital before completing her Fellowship in Paediatric Radiology at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. Her areas of interest include Paediatric Neuroradiology and non-accidental injury. She has previously been Director of Training for the department and has also served on a number of RANZCR committees.

Dr James Christie
Biography
Dr Christie did his initial radiology training at Westmead Hospital. He then underwent fellowship paediatric radiology training at Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children in Sydney and the Hospital for Sick Children Toronto and returned to take a staff specialist appointment at Westmead Hospital and New Children's Hospital in 1997. Since then, he worked in public and private practice roles and recently returned to a part-time position at CHW.

Dr Robert Goetti MD, FRANZCR, EDiNR
Biography
Dr Robert Goetti graduated from the University of Zurich, Switzerland. He completed his radiology training and fellowship in adult and paediatric neuroradiology in Zurich, a fellowship in paediatric radiology at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and holds subspecialist qualification in neuroradiology (EDiNR). He is a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the USYD and his research interest include neurovascular imaging and paediatric neuroradiology.

Dr Albert Prat Matifoll MD, FRANZCR, EDiR
Biography
Dr Prat Matifoll graduated from the University Autonoma de Barcelona and did his Radiology training at Vall Hebron University Hospital (Barcelona). He completed his subspecialty training as paediatric radiology fellow at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. In addition to his role within the radiology department, Albert is a Clinical Senior Lecturer at the USYD. Albert’s research interests include paediatric neuroradiology and oncology.

Dr Hana Issa FRANZCR
Biography
Dr Issa is a paediatric radiologist who obtained her medical degree from Dubai Medical College. She completed two years of paediatric radiology fellowship, including a year at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. Dr Issa has worked at several leading teaching hospitals across Australia and has an interest in paediatric musculoskeletal (MSK), oncology, and abdominal imaging.

Biography
Dr Susi Bottger completed her medical training at the University of Cape Town and specialised in Radiology at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. She pursued a paediatric radiology fellowship at The Children’s Hospital Westmead before obtaining Australian specialist registration. Dr Bottger has nearly 20 years of experience as a paediatric and general radiologist, focusing genetics, trauma, ICU imaging and general body imaging.

Dr Denise Warner
Biography
Dr Denise Warner, now retired from clinical practice, remains active in teaching and research. She earned her medical degree from the University of Sydney and completed her Radiology training at Concord Hospital and the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children. A pioneer in Musculoskeletal Radiology, she holds an ESSR Diploma and specialises in paediatric musculoskeletal radiology, oncology, genetics, and child protection imaging.

Dr Michael Chew FRANZCR
Biography
Dr Chew earned his medical degree from USYD and trained in radiology at Royal North Shore Hospital. From 2007 to 2010, he completed fellowships in abdominal imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital and paediatric radiology at Children’s Hospital Boston. He joined North Shore Radiology in 2011 and works with in urology, neurofibromatosis, and paediatric surgery. He practices at CHW and Royal North Shore Hospital in teaching and committee roles.

Clinical Associate Professor Kartik Bhatia MBBS, BMedSci(Hons), MS, PhD, FRANZCR, CCINR
Biography
Dr Bhatia is an interventional neuroradiologist in Sydney, who has sub-specialised in paediatric neuro-intervention. As part of the busiest Vein of Galen Malformation service in Australasia, he has progressed the use of modern techniques for embolization in this rare condition. He has published in JAMA Neurology on outcomes from mechanical thrombectomy in paediatric stroke. He holds a PhD from USYD where he is a Clinical Associate Professor.

Dr S Murthy Chennapragada FRANZCR
Biography
Dr Murthy is a paediatric and interventional radiologist at our Westmead campus. He completed his Paediatric Radiology fellowship at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead and a Vascular and Interventional Radiology Fellowship at the University Health Network, Toronto. His interests include paediatric hepatobiliary imaging, transplant-related imaging, and vascular paediatric IR. He also serves on the RSNA Regional Committee for Asia/Oceania.

Dr John Samuel Vedamuthu, Senior Medical Officer, Interventional Radiology
Biography
Dr Vedamuthu is from the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. He trained as a doctor and radiologist in India and moved to Sydney in May 2023 in view of pursuing fellowship in Paediatric Interventional Radiology. Dr Vedamuthu completed the fellowship training and he is currently working as Senior Medical Officer in interventional radiology.

Dr Inbaraj holds multiple qualifications including a Masters in Radiodiagnosis and Diploma in medical radio diagnosis from CMC Vellore. He completed his fellowship in Neuro And Vascular Interventional Radiology in 2018 and is also a Fellow at the Royal College of Radiologists UK.
