About this toolkit

The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network (SCHN) has worked with our clinicians to produce the following resources to be shared. 

The resources below are free to use and share widely on social media and other digital platforms of community and health organisations. This includes schools, daycares, medical clinics, public health networks, Local Health Districts, NGOs and community centres.

Text: How much is enough? 7 teaspoons of sunscreen. 
          For full body protection use at least 7 teaspoons (35mL) of sunscreen!

Text: Sun exposure adds up over the day. Use sunscreen ever day, even if it's cloudy! 
          Apply 30 minutes before going out. Reapply every 2 hours. 
          Reapply after swimming, sweating, showering and drying off.

Text: Chemical vs. mineral sunscreen. What's the difference?

Text: Chemical sunscreen. How it works: Chemical sunscreen absorbs into the skins and turns ultraviolet (UV) rays into heat. 
          Benefits: lasts longer with swimming and sweating; easy to spread on the skin. 
          Things to remember: only sunscreen labelled broad-spectrum protects from both UVA and UCB; 
          do not use on babies under 6 months; must be applied at least 30 minutes before time in the sun; may irritate sensitive skin.

Text: Mineral sunscreen. How it works: Mineral sunscreen sits on top of the skin to block UVA and UVB rays. 
          Benefits: no wait time- immediate protection after applied; can be suitable for sensitive skin; lasts longer in the sun when staying dry. 
          Things to remember: rubs off easily, especially in water; can be thick and harder to apply; may leave white residue on the skin.

Text: Use sunscreen every day, whatever your family needs. 
          In a rush? Use mineral sunscreen for immediate protection. 
          Water play or sports? Use chemical sunscreen, it lasts longer when wet. 
          Sensitive skin? Try mineral sunscreen for a gentler alternative. 
          Fussy child? Try chemical sunscreen, it's lighter on the skin. 
          Remember any sunscreen is better the none!

Text: UVA rays. A is for ageing; get deep into the skin; cause long-term damage; occur all year round, even on cloudy days. 
          UVB rays. B is for burning; burn the top layer of the skin; cause long-term damage; are more intense depending on time of day and season.

          Choose a sunscreen with an SPF on 30+ or more.

          Choose an SPF 30+ or higher sunscreen. Check the expiry date (yes, sunscreen can go off!). 
          Don't forget to seek shade and wear protective clothing, including hat and sunglasses.

🌞 Did you know one bad or blistering sunburn as a child or teenager can double the risk of developing skin cancer later in life?  

👦👧 Kids' skin is more sensitive, so they need extra protection. 

🧴 For kids over 6 months, choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30+ and reapply every 2 hours. 

👶 For babies under 6 months, skip the sunscreen – keep them covered with long, lightweight clothing. 

🧢 For all little ones, make sure to seek shade and wear a hat to keep them cool and protected.
