About our service
A trauma is a physical wound to the body caused by an external sources such as car accidents and falls. A trauma or injury includes conditions such as fractures, wounds, sprains, strains, dislocations, concussions, and compressions.
Our Trauma service is one of three Level 1 Paediatric Trauma Centres in NSW, providing immediate care to children suffering a range of injuries from minor to major.
Newborns through to adolescents are brought directly to the hospital from the scene of their injury.
We treat severely injured children from ACT and more remote areas of NSW who need specialised paediatric trauma care through ambulance, helicopter and fixed wing retrieval services.
We work with the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Operating Theatres and Medical Imaging Service that are equipped to care for critically injured children to the highest standards.
Referral process for clinicians
Our department is using Consultmed to manage referrals. The Consultmed platform allows health professionals to send e-referrals to us securely.

How we work
Care and review
Injured children are cared for by the Trauma Service via daily ward rounds. This ensures that thorough care and assessment is provided to patients, with changes to their condition promptly identified and treated. The Trauma team works closely with other hospital specialists to provide superior care and support to patients and families during their various stages of treatment and recovery.
Injury prevention and advocacy
Data collected by the Trauma Service contributes to the ITIM NSW trauma database, as well as being part of a collaboration with AusTQIP for a National Trauma Database aimed at improving Australian trauma processes, through data analysis and research. Surveillance of trends and injury occurrence rates at SCH also provides valuable data for injury prevention.
Health care professionals in trauma are ideally placed to lead initiatives aimed at reducing childhood injury. This includes publically raising awareness of injury trends and mechanisms, taking part in education and prevention campaigns and advocating for regulatory change where necessary.
We collaborate closely with Kidsafe NSW and work with The Children’s Hospital at Westmead as a combined voice in childhood injury prevention.
