Dermatology and wound care

Children with Epidermolysis bullosa require specialised non-adhesive dressings. Standard dressings not only make current wounds worse but can sometimes cause large wounds when they are removed.

Early contact with a specialised hospital, access to appropriate wound care and implantation of prevention strategies to reduce friction when handling will provide the best outcome for a child with Epidermolysis bullosa.

Children attending the EB service at Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick can access EB specific dermatology support in areas including:

  • bathing frequently
  • access to appropriate pain management to allow for wound cleaning
  • access to appropriate EB wound products through the National EB Dressing Scheme
  • itching management
  • home management of infections through antimicrobial soaks and bleach baths
  • wound reviews and wound swabs to promote appropriate use of antibiotic treatment and reduce the risk of antibiotic resistance.

Email support for early and regular wound management is encouraged.

Access dermatology support

NSW health medical photography consent forms will be signed and saved on the patients medical file on Powerchart. Photos of wounds sent by parents to the EB staff through email will be uploaded to Powerchart for team review.

We encourage you to refer to your EB Careplan for early wound management. Your GP or local hospital can also contact the dermatology team at SCH through the switchboard on (02) 9382 1111.

Access dressings

Wound care with dressing support is provided by our dermatology department where children can be linked to the National Epidermolysis Bullosa Dressing Scheme

This scheme offers anyone in Australia with a clinical or genetic diagnosis of EB access to appropriate dressings that can be delivered to their home each month. There is a small monthly co-payment charge for this service.
