Arts, Play and Discovery: Bringing creativity to healing spaces

Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network (SCHN) is reimagining the role of art in healthcare with its Arts, Play and Discovery (APD) strategy. This initiative is shaping the creative and sensory features within the new Bilima Building at Randwick and the Wattle Building at Westmead, ensuring art and play are central to the patient experience.
APD is more than decoration – it combines visual, tactile and interactive elements that encourage imagination, learning and exploration. These features can reduce stress, provide meaningful distractions, and support patients and families during hospital stays and visits.
As part of the strategy, several artists have been engaged to develop artworks for display in public and clinical lifts.

Artists Luca French, Beci Orpin and Annie Holcombe have developed works for both new hospital buildings. Recently, these three artists visited the Wattle Building to see their creations at scale. Fourteen-year-old artist Luca French, whose colourful “Planet Ninget” characters now brighten hospital lifts.
"I hopes kids feel immersed – that the colours and detail bring joy and distraction from the pain they’re going through."

Annie Holcombe drew on her rural upbringing to create works reflecting western Sydney’s heritage.
“I wanted children from the country to feel a connection – to see rivers, sheep and tractors that remind them of home,”
Beci Orpin took inspiration from flora and fauna.

“I hope families feel distracted in a good way – even for a few minutes,”
Since 2020, SCHN has worked with City People, Big Voices and Toy Diplomacy to develop the curatorial plan, consulting more than 2,000 staff and families. In 2024, Expressions of Interest were opened to artists, with a final group selected by the APD working group to ensure diversity, fairness and alignment with the project vision. Consultation with Aboriginal community members also guided the process, embedding connections to Country and cultural inclusivity.
Together, the APD works are helping to create brighter, more welcoming hospitals for children and families across NSW.
