Intensive Care transfers information sheet

Introduction

The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network has two paediatric Intensive Care Units that provide care for children and young people:

Children and young people are admitted to our intensive care units for many reasons including accidents, serious medical conditions or significant illness, as well as surgical procedures that require intensive care post-operatively.

Both our paediatric intensive care units experience periods of time when the demand for beds is very high.

This means that a child or young person will be admitted to the hospital where where a bed is immediately available rather than to the hospital closest to where the child lives.

Sometimes, the child will be transferred from one hospital to the other in order to support admission to intensive care.

If this occurs, we acknowledge the inconvenience and the difficulties it may cause your child and your family.

Supporting you

Please talk to the nurse-in-charge of the Intensive Care Unit and with the doctor looking after your child.

They can explore ways to support you and your child.
