Positive effects of screen time

Screens aren’t all bad. When used well they can have a powerful and positive impact on children.

Connection

Children learn most from “serve and return” interactive- those face-to-face, two-way conversations with adults. Video chatting can be a good secondary alternative to help children stay in touch with distant friends and family.

Learning new skills

Children may use apps or the internet to help learn or develop new skills. This could include learning a new language, a hobby such as cooking or doing school research.

Friendships

Social platforms can be a useful way of forming and maintaining friendships. It can also play an important role in keeping children connected, especially if children are sick or in hospital.

Connection during challenging times

For children with medical conditions, social media platforms allow them to connect with others with similar conditions and provide opportunities for self-expression and increasing awareness among peers about their condition.
