A patient-centred approach involves patient led conversation where the patient answers open-ended questions based on their knowledge, feelings, and understanding. Explore examples below.

“Tell me about school.” OR: “What do you enjoy about school? What do you dislike? (Open-ended; harder to answer “OK.”)

“What do you do to stay healthy?.” OR: “Do you have trouble with body confidence?.” (Open-ended; can’t answer “OK.”)

Activities

“What kinds of drugs have you seen around your school or at parties?” OR: “Do any of your friends use drugs or alcohol?” (Less personal; eases into a difficult discussion).

“You told me you’ve been going out with Steve for the past 3 months. Has your relationship become sexual?” (Context makes question seem less intrusive.) OR: “Are you attracted to anyone currently?” (non-judgemental).
