About our service

Respiratory Medicine looks after children with respiratory disorders through consultations and testing services. 

The department incorporates the chest and asthma, Cystic Fibrosis and outreach clinics in Goulburn and Orange, as well as providing patient care and consultations.

Respiratory Medicine also works closely with Sleep Medicine.

Our services include: 

  • the Respiratory Function Unit performs a wide range of respiratory function tests
  • the Complex Respiratory and Asthma Service provides asthma care within the hospital, Sydney West Area Health Service, and in the community
  • the Cystic Fibrosis service provides care for children 0 - 18 years old
  • allied health care from physiotherapists and dieticians.

Referral process for clinicians

Our department is using Consultmed to manage referrals. The Consultmed platform allows health professionals to send e-referrals to us securely.

Referral and appointment process for parents and carers

Request a referral

To make an appointment at our clinic, you will need a referral from your GP, paediatrician or specialist. 

They will assess your child, discuss your concerns, and make a referral to the appropriate service.  

Track your referral

Our department uses Consultmed to manage referrals. Your referring clinician sends the e-referral to us using the secure Consultmed platform.  

Once we receive the referral, we will send you an email with your tracking information. We will update you as we process the referral and book your appointment. 

To receive these updates, please ask your referring clinician to include your email on the referral.  

If your clinician has questions about Consultmed or require technical support, they can contact helpdesk@consultmed.co.

Complex Respiratory and Asthma service

The service works with children and their families to provide asthma management and education at The Children's Hospital at Westmead for inpatients and outpatients.

The service also works in collaboration with other hospitals and community services in the surrounding local health districts. We also offer a range of educational programs for health professionals.

Respiratory Function unit

The Respiratory Function Unit provides testing to establish a diagnosis, provide ways of assessing the severity of disease and to monitor treatment progress.

The laboratory tests patients with a broad range of respiratory disorders including asthma, cystic fibrosis, Suppurative Lung Disease and neuromuscular disorders.

The tests provided by our laboratory are important to the follow-up care plan for lung transplant patients and also to assess the risks of some chemotherapy drugs for cancer patients.

Lung function tests offered:

  • spirometry
  • FeNO
  • allergen skin tests (inhaled only)
  • lung volumes
  • diffusion (DLCO)
  • Mannitol

Referrals:

  • Paediatric respiratory specialists can refer for the above six tests.                           
  • Paediatricians can refer for spirometry, allergy skin prick rests and FeNO only. (Skin tests are only available for spirometry patients)

Professor Hiran Selvadurai - Department Head Respiratory Medicine

Biography
Professor Selvadurai completed his undergraduate degree at The University of Sydney and trained at Royal Prince Alfred and Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children. His PhD (USyd) was on exercise physiology in children with lung disease. He worked as a staff specialist at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto and was Director of Cystic Fibrosis before returning to Sydney. He served on the Board of Directors at TSANZ and chaired several committees.

Biography
Professor Fitzgerald graduated from the University of Sydney and trained at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children before undertaking a post-doctoral Fellowship at McGill University. He has received a Churchill Fellowship, written two books on paediatric medicine and serves as the Editor in Chief of an international paediatric respiratory review journal. He is currently the co-lead of the Cystic Fibrosis service and the Surgical Lung Clinic.

Biography
Dr Geshani Jayasuriya is a Paediatric Respiratory and Sleep Physician. She trained at The University of Newcastle and completed her fellowship here at Westmead. She is a clinical lecturer USYD and is completing her PhD in imaging techniques to detect early damage from lung disease. Her interests include severe asthma, chronic suppurative lung disease, the investigation of childhood snoring, and the transition from paediatric to adult health care.

Biography
Dr Stuart Haggie graduated from the University of Wollongong and completed his respiratory medicine training at The Children's hospital at Westmead. In addition to his role within the respiratory department, Stuart works as a retrieval doctor for NETS NSW and a general paediatrician at Shoalhaven Hospital. Stuart's research interests include complicated pneumonia, he has completed a PhD in this field.

Biography
Mimi Lu is a Paediatric Sleep and Respiratory Physician who received her MBBS through UNSW. She has also completed her Sleep and Respiratory Fellowship at Westmead and General Paediatric Fellowship at Randwick. Clinical areas of expertise include management of children with snoring and sleep disordered breathing, restless sleep, circadian rhythm disorders, excessive daytime tiredness, parasomnias, asthma, chronic cough, and childhood wheezing.

Biography
Dr Jagdev Singh (Dr. Dev) is a paediatric respiratory and sleep consultant at Westmead. He spent 17 years caring for children in various fields including infants, critical medicine, endocrine, retrieval medicine, and developmental paediatrics in Australia and Malaysia before finding his true calling in respiratory and sleep medicine. Dr. Dev is a researcher and a clinical lecturer at USYD and provides education for paediatricians and trainees.
