Introduction
Mepilex® Ag is a non-adherent soft foam dressing that contains silver, useful in “oozy” wounds, like burns. This dressing doesn't stick to the wound as much as other dressings which makes it easier to remove. It is a flexible dressing so children can move and play as normal.
Important: Do not remove the dressing at home
Mepilex® Ag can be kept in place for up to 7 days. We will let you know when to come back to have the dressing changed.
Pain
- Your child may experience some pain. You may give your child paracetamol (e.g. Panadol) and/or ibuprofen (e.g. Nurofen).
- If these medications are not sufficient, ask for 'Painstop Day-Time' at your local Chemist. This medication is available over the counter on request.
- Please seek medical advice if pain persists.
Diet
Protein rich foods help with healing of burns.
It is important that your child eats and drinks foods that are high in protein. These include milk, cheese, custard, yoghurt, meat, fish and baked beans.
Washing
- You can sponge bath your child on non-bandaged areas each day.
- Do not attempt a shower or bath. Wetting the dressing increases risk of infection.
- Keep the dressing clean and dry.
- If your child's dressings are on their hands, they can be wrapped in plastic wrap during meal times.
Activity
- Your child cannot swim while dressings are in place.
- Please avoid sand pits. It is important to also avoid sand entering the wound.
- Encourage your child to resume all normal activities, except for contact sports.
When to come to hospital emergency
Please bring your child to hospital emergency if there is:
- Persistent pain.
- A large amount of ooze from the bandages (a small amount of ooze is normal).
- Offensive smell from the bandages (some smell is expected).
- High temperatures (your child has a temperature or fever greater than 38.5 degrees).
- The bandages become wet or fall off.
