Rheumatology and supporting your child at school

We encourage all children to attend school and participate in extra-curricular as soon as possible.

Depending on your child’s illness, your child may require a transition back into their school routine. We recommend meeting with your child’s school to discuss the diagnosis and the need to balance participation and accommodation.

Contact your child’s team to discuss your concerns and they can provide you with guidance on how to proceed.

The rules for secondary school are more stringent and may require detailed documentation and assessments. For students undertaking the High School Certificate (HSC), it is recommended these discussions should occur early to allow time for the school and team to get the documentation that is required.

Contact your treatment team to discuss any support you require.

  • The National Education Standards Authority has prepared these Educational guidelines.
  • Arthritis Australia has a guide for teachers, which we recommend families to share with your school. Most teachers and families have found this resource helpful in assisting schools support children and young people remain engaged in their school.

If your child requires physical assistance to attend school, speak to your care team for assistance. The occupational and physiotherapist may be available to assist with practical support.
