Access to medical records
Access to Health Records held by the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network can be facilitated through the Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2002 (the HRIP Act). One of the purposes of the HRIP Act is to promote the fair and responsible handling of health information by enabling individuals to gain access to their health information.
This may be done by providing a copy of the health information or providing a reasonable opportunity to inspect and take notes from the Health Record. A Health Information Manager or a clinician must be present for this.
If you are not the patient, you will need to include written consent from the patient clearly indicating that the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network may disclose the records to you. You will be asked to apply in writing and will be charged the relevant fee.

Subpoenas
What is a subpoena?
A subpoena to produce is a formal court order compelling SCHN to deliver specific documents, records, or physical items (things) relevant to a legal case to the court. Failure to comply can lead to serious penalties like contempt of court. We carefully review every subpoena and only share information when required by law, while taking steps to protect patient privacy.
Sending a subpoena
If you represent an agency and need to subpoena a health record from SCHN, please deliver it in person or post it directly to Release of Information (ROI) Unit at the following street or postal addresses.
Where court approval for electronic service has been granted, subpoenas may be emailed to: SCHN-ROI@health.nsw.gov.au.
