Transition to Paediatric Nursing (TNP) program

The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network offers two programs that support the transition of nurses to our paediatric workforce; the Transition to Nursing (GradStart) program, and the Transition to Paediatric Nursing (TPN) program. These programs provide participants with a supportive environment as they transition to the clinical specialty of paediatric nursing. The aim is to nurture, support and challenge the transitioning nurse as they focus on the professional expectations and attributes of the registered or enrolled nurse and develop a paediatric knowledge base. Participants will be offered ongoing professional and clinical support, group study days and learning opportunities.

Speciality Transition Programs (STP)

The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network (SCHN) is committed to the growth and development of our nursing workforce. SCHN offers Specialty Transition Programs (STPs) for Registered Nurses in several specialty clinical areas throughout the network, which provide nurses with greater opportunities to increase their nursing practice and advance their careers. The aim of these programs is to equip participants with the experience, skill and knowledge to successfully transition into a specialised paediatric clinical area. During the program, registered nurses are encouraged to develop advanced critical thinking and problem solving throughout the program and into their professional careers.

Students who complete an STP can apply for advanced standing for postgraduate nursing courses with the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS).

Leadership pathway

The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network Leading People Development Framework (LPDF) is a comprehensive leadership and management development framework called to support our people in their continuous leadership journey.

The LPDF supports staff in building essential skills in management and leadership capabilities. The framework recognises that our people bring key skills and experience with them that can be enhanced and built upon to support them in being part of a skilled, confident, and capable workforce. The LDPF guides participants to navigate and plan individual development journeys as part of the performance and development process. It empower leaders and managers to cultivate leadership skills in others.

Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) Development pathway

The Sydney Children's Hospitals Network recognises that Nurse Unit Managers (NUMs) play an integral part to the healthcare system and have a powerful influence at the point of service. The NUM Development pathway provides a bespoke development journey to meet the needs of foundational, intermediate, and advanced NUMs. The pathway enhances the non-clinical capabilities of a NUM to ensure role effectiveness. It follows a blended learning approach incorporating experiential, social and formal learning in developing managerial and leadership capacity. The pathway emphasises the importance of balancing structure and flexibility, incorporating educational and training opportunities, as well as a support system via mentorship and coaching, that ensures sustainability of the NUM role. The NUM Development pathway is underpinned by the LPDF principles.

Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) pathway

The Sydney Children's Hospital Network creating a professional development framework for Clinical Nurse Educators (CNE) in 2024, that will provide a standardised approach in skills and knowledge. The pathway aims to increase the CNE’s confidence and competence in their roles.
