Clinical governance and medical administration

Clinical Governance Unit (Service Improvement Unit)

The Clinical Governance Unit brings together services responsible for driving continuous improvement across The Children's Hospital at Westmead to ensure the provision of excellence in child health care. Oversees patient safety and clinical risk, continuous improvement, committee management, consumer participation, clinical indicator and clinical audit programs, policy, procedure, guidelines and review of legislation, facilitation of external reviews of clinical governance systems and management of key clinical governance systems. 9845 3442

Risk Management and Governance

Grace Centre For Newborn Care

Statewide Service for newborn care through the Perinatal Services Network caring for sick newborn infants requiring multidisciplinary care, cardiac and surgical treatment, or the management of complex medical disorders. T: 02 9845 0000

Cardiology

The Heart Centre for Children (incorporating the Adolph Basser Cardiac Institute) provides a wide range of services for children with congenital and acquired heart diseases, from diagnosis (echocardiograms, ECG's and stress tests) to cardiac cardiac catheterisation and intervention, to surgery. Heart Centre for Children

Audiology

The Audiology Department provides a comprehensive paediatric diagnostic service to children and babies from birth onwards and is one of the three diagnostic clinics for the State Wide Infant Screening-Hearing Program. The clinic is experienced with patients who are difficult to test and will also provide second opinions, counselling and information about the effects of hearing loss.

Bear Cottage

Bear Cottage is a children’s hospice – a very special place dedicated to caring for children with life-limiting conditions and their families.  Programs include regular booked respite, emergency respite, pain and symptom management, end-of-life care, play therapy, specialised camps and activities for children, camps and activities for family members and bereavement support. T: 02 9845 0000

Biochemistry

Analyses a diverse range of chemical and biochemical substances including drugs in blood and other body fluids collected from patients. The range of assays performed cover all the tests commonly required by the Hospital. T: 02 9845 3283

Biochemical Genetics

Comprehensive programme for the diagnosis and biochemical management of all paediatric and adult patients with inborn errors of metabolism. These services are also extended to other states in Australia, when requested, and to neighbouring countries. T: 02 9845 3122

Blood Bank

The Blood Transfusion Laboratory liaises closely with the Australian Red Cross Blood Service to support patients at CHW who require blood transfusions and blood product support. T: 02 9845 2284

Bone Marrow Transplant

The Cancer Centre at The Children's Hospital at Westmead provides BMT services for consultation. The unit provides services for the collection, cryopreservation, manipulation, storage and infusion of Haematopoietic Progenitor Cells. Children's Assessment Centre

The CAC at The Children's Hospital at Westmead is specially designed for the comprehensive assessment and management of various chronic disabilities within the centre and the community. T: 02 9845 0000

Clinical Genetics

Clinical assessment, investigation and the provision of genetic counselling. Specialised genetic services at The Children's Hospital at Westmead are delivered by a team including clinical geneticists, genetic counsellors and a genetic social worker. T 02 9845 0000

Connective Tissue Dysplasia Management Service

Cystic Fibrosis

Endocrinology

Diabetes and diabetes complications screening, endocrine services, growth and bone metabolic screening, inpatient services including diagnostic services, dynamic endocrine testing, acute care and ongoing management, endocrinology outpatient clinics.  24 hour urgent telephone service for families and health professionals, endocrinology laboratory services (diagnostic and research), extensive clinical research activities in diabetes, endocrine, growth and bones. T: 02 9845 0000

Gastroenterology (James Fairfax Institute)

Multidisciplinary tertiary referral service which provides Consultative Gastroenterology Clinics, Clinical Diagnostic Procedures and Endoscopy & Colonoscopy service, the Consultative Clinical Nutrition Service, the Hepatology (Liver) Clinic and the Liver Transplant Unit, the Developmental Disability Dysphagia Clinic, as well as clinical and laboratory research and education into nutritional and gastroenterological disorders in childhood. General Medicine

General Medicine is available 24 hours a day. A consultant paediatrician is contactable through the switchboard on T: 02 9845 0000.

Genetic Metabolic Disorders Service

Provides comprehensive management for such diseases as amino acid disorders, carbohydrate metabolism disorders, urea cycle disorders, organic acid disorders, cobalamin and folate metabolism disorders, fatty acid oxidation defects, hyperlipidaemia disorders, organellar disorders and Rett syndrome. T: 02 9845 3654

Haematology

Comprehensive clinical, consultative and diagnostic service in paediatric haematology and blood transfusion. Provides treatment and long term care for children with congenital clotting disorders, haemoglobinopathies, bone marrow disorders and other non-malignant haematological diseases. T: 02 9845 0000

Histopathology

Services include pathological tissue diagnosis for surgical specimens and an autopsy service. Cytological examination of fluids (CSF, pleural, ascitic, cysts, urine etc) as well as Fine Needle Aspirations are offered by the department. T: 02 9845 0000

Immunisation

Core service is research, especially in relation to immunisation and diseases it can prevent. Regularly assesses new vaccines, better forms of old vaccines and trains research workers. T: 02 9845 0000

Infection Control

Infection control education to all staff and volunteers. Develops and reviews policy, procedures and guidelines for infection control. Monitoring of infectious patients as well as outbreak prevention and management. Also provides tuberculosis assessment and screening of staff and children. 02 9845 0000

Infectious Diseases and Microbiology

Clinical infectious disease consultation and referral service, an infection control service and a laboratory service. The Department plays a leading role in the Refugee Service. 02 9845 0000

Medical Imaging

The Department of Medial Imaging provides the following paediatric digital imaging and interventional services: General Radiography, Fluoroscopy, Ultrasound, Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Interventional Radiology. 02 9845 0000

Molecular Pathology

Research into the development of new molecular diagnostic assays for the detection, screening and monitoring of human diseases. The assays developed enhance patient care and improve infection control measures within the CHW. 02 9845 0000

Nephrology

Provides comprehensive care to children with kidney or renal problems. Also maintains an active research programme through the Centre for Kidney Research and provide training in paediatric nephrology to the Australian clinical community and to paediatric nephrologists from developing countries around the world. 02 9845 0000

Newborn Screening

Certain inborn errors of metabolism and other metabolic disorders can be detected presymptomatically in apparently healthy babies using appropriate laboratory tests. The NSW Newborn Screening (NBS) Programme includes the state reference laboratory which screens all newborns in NSW and the ACT (approx 100,000 per annum) for the detection and monitoring of specific congenital abnormalities. 02 9845 0000

Neurogenetics Research

Investigates the causes of childhood muscular dystrophies and works closely with the Neuromuscular Clinical Service to provide coordinated diagnostic services and clinical management for children with neuromuscular disorders. 02 9845 0000

Neurology and Neurosurgery

The T.Y. Nelson Department of Neurology & Neurosurgery incorporating neurophysiology and the Institute for Neuromuscular Research provides a comprehensive inpatient & outpatient clinical service for neurology, neurosurgery, neurophysiology, neuro liaison and research & training. 02 9845 0000

Nuclear Medicine

Nuclear medicine is a branch of medical imaging that uses small amounts of radioactive material to diagnose and determine the severity of or treat a variety of diseases. The Department of Nuclear Medicine provides a comprehensive, specialised, paediatric service for both inpatients and outpatients. 02 9845 0000

Oncology

The Cancer Centre for Children  treats children with childhood cancer, and children requiring stem cell transplantation. 02 9845 0000

Oncology Long Term Follow Up

Patients are referred to the oncology long term follow up clinic by their treating oncologist when they are five years off therapy. The clinics are held in the oncology treatment centre on the second and fourth Thursdays of every months. Patients are seen every 1-3 years. 02 9845 0000

Oncology Research

The Children's Cancer Research Unit (CCRU), formerly known as the Oncology Research Unit (ORU) , is the research dedicated arm of the Cancer Centre for Children. Its role covers research, education and tumour banking. 02 9845 0000

Orthopaedics

Tertiary care for the Western Metropolitan region and state-wide care for complex orthopaedic cases. 02 9845 0000

Orthoptics

The department offers assessment of visual acuity, visual fields, strabismus, eye movements and binocular function. Specialised electrodiagnostic tests, such as electroretinograms and visually evoked responses are carried out in the clinic. Paediatric contact lens instruction is also provided. 02 9845 0000

Perfusion (Heart Centre for Children)

The Perfusion Department is an integral component of the Heart Centre for Children. The primary service carried out by the Perfusionists is the operation of the heart lung bypass machine for children undergoing heart surgery requiring cardiopulmonary bypass. Other services offered by the perfusion department include the overseeing of patients requiring ECMO. 02 9845 0000

Pain and Palliative Care

Care for all children with acute and chronic pain and for those receiving palliative care. Service includes bereavement support and a family support volunteer program.  02 9845 0000

Poisons Information Centre

This is a service to offer advice on the treatment of poisonings and envenomations for both adults and children. Advice is provided to both the public and health professionals. 9845 3111 (131126)

Renal Treatment Centre

The Renal Treatment Centre is a specialised unit which caters for children with all facets of renal failure. The unit caters for children requiring both acute and long term haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, plasma exchange as well as other renal replacement therapies. The unit also cares for children that are undergoing day only renal surgical procedures and provide both pre and post operative care to these children. 9845 0000

Respiratory Medicine

Comprehensive consultative and investigative service for children with respiratory disorders. It incorporates the Chest and Asthma, Cystic Fibrosis and Sleep Clinics, as well as the Respiratory function unit (RFU). The RFU performs tests to determine lung function and also does allergy skin tests. Education is also provided to the families of all asthmatic patients while the sleep unit tests children for sleep abnormalities. 9845 0000

Respiratory Support

Specialist and consultative services for children who require treatment with some form of respiratory support during sleep. These include monitoring (in the home, or in the sleep unit), oxygen, and forms of non-invasive positive airway pressure support. 9845 0000

Rheumatology

Comprehensive rheumatology service providing care for children with the full range of rheumatic diseases. 9845 0000

Sleep Unit

The David Read Sleep Unit is the diagnostic arm of the Respiratory Support Service (RSS). It undertakes comprehensive consultative and investigative services for children with various sleep disorders. 9845-0000

Sydney Genome Diagnostics

The departments of Cytogenetics and molecular Genetics have combined to become the new Sydney Genome Diagnostics. Their combined services include

  • Constitutive (blood), Oncological and Prenatal testing for chromosome abnormalities of all types
  • Testing for known and unique mutations, testing extended families, prenatal diagnosis and training of laboratory and clinical staff in the field of molecular genetics. 9845 0000

Urology

There are three Urologists in the department; 3 staff specialists. A surgical registrar is seconded from the department of General Surgery. A resident on rotation is shared with General surgery. The department has a close association with the departments of Nephrology and General Surgery. 9845 0000

The Western Sydney Genetics Program at The Children's Hospital at Westmead provides a comprehensive and integrated medical genetics service. 9845 3452

Ward list

Camperdown Ward

Inpatient care for children receiving treatment for cancer. Services include administration of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, supportive therapy for immunosuppressed children, stem cell transplantation and stem cell harvesting (apheresis), as well as radioactive isolation for children receiving MIBG or other radioablative therapies. 9845 1123

Clancy Ward

Clubbe Ward

Clubbe Ward cares for children 0 - 16 years who require specialist treatment for burns and complex wound management. Clubbe Ward is the paediatric burns referral centre for NSW. 9845 0000

Commercial Travellers Ward

Commercial Travellers ward is the 18 bed Neuroscience Unit. The ward also houses the 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU). It provides person-centred neuroscience nursing care to infants, children and adolescents with illnesses and injuries related to the central nervous system, and cranio- facial abnormalities. 9845 1134

Hunter Baillie Ward

Medical ward catering for children 0 to 11 years. Bed numbers vary from 19-29 depending on the time of year. Hunter Baillie cares for patients with a wide range of conditions including respiratory illnesses, feeding and sleeping difficulties, eczema, gastro-intestinal problems, metabolic disorders, rare syndromes as well as the occasional minor and major surgical cases. 9845-0000

Middleton Ward (Day Surgery)

Middleton Ward provides care for children requiring same Day Surgery and those arriving for Day of Surgery admission. 9845 000

Orthopaedic Ward

The Orthopaedic Ward provides tertiary care for orthopaedic cases including general orthopaedics, orthopaedic trauma, hip, scoliosis, spina bifida, cerebral palsy and neuromuscular disorders, limb lengthening and deformity correction, foot and ankle, upper extremity, congenital hand and hand trauma and musculoskeletal oncology. 9845 000

Surgical Ward

Surgical ward provides care for children who have had surgery or may need surgery. 9845 4000

Turner Ward (Day Stay and Care By Parent)

Turner Unit is a unique combination of a Medical Day Stay Unit, Care by Parent Unit and Endocrine Testing Unit. Together the units provide specialist care to chronic and acutely unwell children 0-18 yrs. This includes haematology, immunology, metabolics, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, neurology, bone service and cardiology. 9845 0000

Variety Ward

Variety Club Ward at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is primarily an infectious unit that cares for children requiring isolation. The care needed ranges from infectious oncology and general medical patients, babies with respiratory illnesses, patients with infected eczema, gastro and other gastro intestinal diseases. The Variety Club Ward also cares for outlying non-infectious oncology patients and patients requiring bone marrow transplants. 9845 0000

Wade Ward

Wade Ward is a 15 bed specialist adolescent unit that works in conjunction with the Adolescent Medical Unit (AMU) to provide a developmentally appropriate environment for young people who require treatment for various health issues. 9845 0000

Aboriginal Health

Advice regarding Aboriginal children's health and wellbeing and support to Aboriginal children and their families. Working towards contributing to improvements in Aboriginal children's health and wellbeing within SCHN and across NSW. 9845 0000

Adolescent Medicine

Clinical services are provided to young people aged between 12 and 18 years. The multidisciplinary team includes adolescent physicians, social workers, nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists and youth art workers. 9845 0000

Child Protection Unit

Provides a range of services to children and young people who are thought to be at risk of harm due to neglect, physical, sexual and emotional abuse and domestic violence. 9845 0000

Eating Disorder Service

Child and adolescent inpatient and outpatient treatment for eating disorders. Medical treatment and re-feeding as well as individual and family therapy. 9845 0000

Psychological Medicine

The Department of Psychological Medicine provides specialist mental health consultation, clinical and advocacy services for children and young people who are experiencing psychological or behavioural problems or disorders associated with medical illness or health concerns. 9845 0000

Refugee Clinic

The Refugee Service consists of a weekly Refugee Clinic (HARK Clinic) on Friday mornings, and a consultation service for problems with Refugee In-patients and Out-patients. 9845 0000

Transition Services

Transition is the purposeful, planned movement of adolescents and young adults with chronic physical and medical conditions from child-centred to an adult oriented health care system. 9845 0000

Academic Surgery

Anaesthesia

Biomedical Engineering

Manages medical technology used in patient care at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children, Westmead and it’s ancillary operations. 9845 2602

Burns Unit

Paediatric arm of NSW Severe Burn Injury Service and is the referral centre for all major paediatric burns in NSW. The unit consists of a total of 8 beds comprising 2 Paediatric Intensive Care Unit beds and 6 inpatient beds on Clubbe Ward. 9845 0000 

Children's Hospital Burns Research Institute

Provides the highest standard of burn treatment care through methods that are constantly reviewed via relevant research. 9845 1908

Cleft Palate Clinic

Provides a range of coordinated, tertiary, multidisciplinary services for children with cleft lip and/or cleft palate and related conditions, as well as assessment services for children with velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI). 9845 2079

Craniofacial

Multidisciplinary clinic for diagnosis, assessment and treatment of craniofacial malformations, coordinated through the Plastic Surgery Department. Attended by staff from Plastic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthodontics, Genetics, Nursing, Speech Therapy and Psychiatry. 9845 0000

Deafness Centre

Assessment, diagnosis and counselling service for deaf and hearing impaired babies, children and adolescents.  It is provided free of charge to all children in NSW. 9845 0000

Dentistry

Specialised in treating children with special needs, children with oro-facial anomalies/syndromes, children who require specialist dental care under sedation or general anaesthesia and emergency management of oro-facial trauma. 9845 0000

Ear Nose and Throat

The ENT department provides inpatient and outpatient services to children with ear, nose and throat conditions. 9845 0000

Surgery Division

There are ten Paediatric Surgeons in the Department of Surgery providing clinical services including  general paediatric surgery, urology, burns, transplant, trauma, anorectal manometry, antenatal consultations,  Hirschsprung's Disease, Hypospadias and Training – SET/Medical Students. 9845 3235

Appliance Centre

Patients may hire equipment on discharge for a period of three months (an extension may be available upon request). A deposit and hire fee applies for this service. If equipment is required for long term use, longer than 6 months, an application should be made to: Enable NSW (Program of Appliances for disable people PADP). 984 0000

Hospital in the Home (formerly CAPAC)  aims to prevent unnecessary admissions to hospital and facilitate the early discharge of children with acute illnesses by providing ongoing interventions, assessment, education and support for the families in the comfort of their own home when clinically appropriate. 9845 3857

Central Sterilising Services

Sterilising service for all operating theatres in the main Operating Suite, as well as wards and departments within the facility that use sterile instruments, trays and other sterile consumables and do not have their own dedicated steriliser units. 9845 0000

Chaplains

Provision of chaplaincy services to patients, families and staff in the Hospital in the most effective manner, regardless of their health status, faith, economic or cultural background, with the utmost integrity and confidentiality. 9845 0000

Child Life Therapy

In the Child Life Therapy Department we acknowledge that illness and hospitalisation may cause stress and anxiety for children and their families.  We aim to minimise stress and help children cope positively with their healthcare experience, by using appropriate play experiences, educational resources and procedural support. 9845 0000

Children's Hospital Institute of Sports Medicine

Comprehensive, specialised approach to children's exercise, fitness, physical activity, exercise science and sports medicine by combining practitioners with clinical and academic experts from their respective disciplines. 9845 0000

Child Development Unit

Specialist centre for assessing and helping children with a wide range of developmental problems. The Unit does not duplicate services provided by the regional Developmental Disability Teams, Community Health Centres or General Paediatricians. 9845 0000

Disability Specialist Unit

Multidisciplinary diagnostic and assessment team which conducts developmental, intellectual, functional and health assessments for children and adults who have, or are suspected of having, a developmental issue. 9701 6300

Kids Health

Health Promotion Unit within the Hospital that incorporates a resource centre and bookshop. 9845 3585

Kids Rehab

Supports and assists children and young people with a physical disability and/or acquired brain injury to reach their full potential in all areas of development. This involves assessment, recommendations for interventions that help to restore functions, follow up review assessments and prevention strategies for problems that may occur. 9845 0000

Nutrition and Dietetics

The Department of Nutrition & Dietetics provides nutritional care and education to all inpatient units and to specialised outpatients clinics. A limited service is available to general outpatients (this currently has a 3-6 month waiting list). 9845 0000

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapists treat babies, children and adolescents with developmental, physical, psychological and social difficulties that have caused temporary or permanent disruption to their lives. 9845 0000

Orthotics

Parramatta Early Childhood Assessment Team

Multidisciplinary, diagnostic and assessment service for children under 6 years of age.  Developmental, intellectual, functional and health assessments are conducted for children who have, or are suspected of having, a global developmental delay or intellectual disability. 9845 0000

Physiotherapy

The Physiotherapy Department works with children and young people, their families and other therapy services to establish, restore and maintain optimum function, independence and fitness. 9845 0000

Social Work

The Department of Social Work is concerned with the emotional wellbeing of the children and families who attend The Children's Hospital at Westmead. The Department of Social Work offers a wide range of services within the hospital and community. 9845 0000

Speech Pathology

The child's family and caregivers are involved in a multidisciplinary approach to weight management of the obese child. A Child Weight management program is available for children aged 0-12 and an Adolescent Weight Management Program available for 12-16 year olds. 9845 0000

Interpreters

The Hospital uses two interpreting services. One for interpreting in-person, the other for interpreting via telephone. The Health Care Interpreter Service (HCIS) provides face-to-face interpreting for the Hospital.  For a HCIS interpreter, telephone 9840 3456. The Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) is used for interpreting via telephone. For a TIS interpreter, telephone 131 450. Both services are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Junior Medical Staff

Mail Room and Photocopy Room

The Mail Room accepts, sorts and distributes all mail received by the Hospital. As well, Mail Room staff collect outgoing mail and prepare it for despatch through Australia Post or Go Mail (DX) on a daily basis. Management Support Analysis Unit

The Management Support & Analysis Unit (MSAU) is a multidisciplinary team, which incorporates people from finance, costing, information technology, statistics and health information management. Parents Accommodation

Security staff provide a 24-hour security service to staff, patients and their families and visitors. Services include response to incidents and requests for assistance, after-hours escorts to car parks, lost 

Stores

The Stores Department accepts delivery of all items of stock, equipment and donated goods received on behalf of the Hospital. Goods received and stock requirements for wards and departments are delivered daily throughout the Hospital by Stores staff. Items to be returned to suppliers are also processed via the Stores back dock.  02 9845 0000

Transport

The Transport Department provides a daily courier service between the Hospital and the city and suburbs including other hospitals, blood bank, etc. as required. Couriers leave the Hospital at 10.00 a.m. and 1.00 p.m. daily and at other times for urgent matters where possible. Child Care Services

The centre is a 40 place child care centre for children from the age of 4 months to 5 years of age. The centre is open from 6.30am to 6.30pm, Monday - Friday, 50 weeks of the year. Priority is given to children of staff working at The Children's Hospital at Westmead. 02 9845 3960

Vacation Care
