Liver transplant surgery
A liver transplant is a big operation, and there is a lot to take in.
Knowing what to expect can help parents and carers feel more prepared and support their child through each step. This section explains what happens before, during and after transplant surgery.
Preparing for hospital:
To help your child feel more comfortable during their hospital stay, you may wish to bring some familiar items from home. Favourite toys, books, comfortable clothing, a special blanket or a pillow can help make the hospital environment feel less unfamiliar.
At times, your child may be asked to wear hospital pyjamas. While these may not feel as comfortable as their own clothes, they help keep personal belongings clean and make it easier for staff to provide care.
During their stay, your child will sleep in a hospital bed on the ward. A parent or carer can usually stay with them throughout their admission. Depending on the ward, there may be other children nearby, as well as toys, games and activities to help keep children entertained and engaged during their recovery.
