About our service
The Limb Management team Clinic at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick is a multidisciplinary service for children and young people who have a congenital limb difference, limb malformation or amputation.
The service offers information, assessment, management and support for children, young people and their families so they can participate fully in all aspects of everyday life. Medical and allied health staff work with children and families to address issues that arise with everyday living throughout a child’s growth and development. We are available to collaborate and consult with your child’s community service providers.
We are part of Rehab2Kids.
Referral information and eligibility criteria
This service is a part of Rehab2Kids, Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick.
- Management of leg length differences need to be referred to Orthopaedics.
- Surgical management of congenital hand malformations need to be referred to Congenital Hand Clinic.

Clinic information
The Limb Management Clinic runs every second Wednesday afternoon in the outpatient department, on level 0.
The Limb Management Clinic delivers a range of medical specialist services including: Paediatric Rehabilitation, Orthopaedics, Plastic Surgery, Genetics and Allied Health.
It is common for your child to have frequent appointments with the Limb Management Clinic in the first few years of life, and then at important milestones such as starting daycare/ pre-school, school/ high school and moving on to adult services.
Plan to be in clinic until 5 pm if you would like to consult with multiple medical specialists during the appointment.
Paediatric rehabilitation consultant
The Paediatric Rehabilitation Consultant will assess the overall needs of your child and family. The Consultant co-ordinates the care being provided by the team. Advice will be provided about procedures that may be available to enhance your child’s function at different stages of growth and development. When appropriate an artificial limb (prosthesis) or appliance will be prescribed and reviewed regularly at future visits.
Genetics specialist
The Genetics Specialist is available to give advice regarding genetic or hereditary implications for your child, parents and future children. Specific genetic tests may be indicated in some families, especially if considering future pregnancies.
Orthopaedic surgeon
The Orthopaedic Surgeon will advise on the timing and type of surgical options for correction of leg and foot anomalies. Intervention is aimed at promoting and encouraging mobility and functional efficiency throughout growth and development.
Plastic surgeon
The Plastic Surgeon will provide expertise about the surgical options available to enhance the appearance and function of the upper limb at different stages of growth and development.
Occupational therapist
The Occupational Therapist consults and advises about your child’s ability to do day-to-day activities, provides strategies and uses technology to assist the child to participate fully in home, school and leisure activities. This includes training in the use of upper limb prostheses.
Physiotherapist
The Physiotherapist consults and advises about your child’s development and mobility, instructs your child in an appropriate exercise program and manages the training and use of lower limb prostheses.
Social worker
The Social Worker offers emotional support and practical assistance in relation to limb differences both within the family and community. The Social Worker provides counselling around adjustment, self-esteem/body image, participation in social activities and if necessary, can assist in preparing your child and family for amputation or other medical procedures. The Social Worker can provide information about Centrelink, NDIS support and resources for Limb Differences.
Prosthetist
The Prosthetist in consultation with the family and clinic team design and fit the upper and/or lower prosthesis.
