About our service

The orthotic department provides orthoses (rehabilitation, orthopaedic, orthotic and related devices). The department provides services to hospital inpatients and outpatients.

Orthoses are worn by patients to offer support, protection, correction to the musculoskeletal system and to enhance mobility. Generally, orthoses are custom made to ensure comfort and afford the most intimate fit and function possible.

Orthotists regularly attend orthopaedic and rehabilitation clinics and are also available to attend other outpatient clinics on request. The service provides a consultative service in orthotic management of paediatric conditions to other community centres and participate in teaching programs.

We work with children and young people, their families, other therapy services and referring medical officers to establish, restore and maintain optimum function and independence. The needs of each child will be assessed and the most appropriate orthotic management will be provided.

Outpatients

In order for your child to be seen we accept referrals from select Medical Officers associated with The Children's Hospital at Westmead.

Inpatients

Health care professionals within The Children's Hospital at Westmead can submit referrals on behalf of eligible inpatients.

What to expect

You will receive a letter to notify you when your child has been added to the waitlist.

We will then notify you again once an appointment becomes available.

Cost

There may be a cost associated with any medical/adaptive device or orthosis. 

Patients referred from public clinics within the hospital are typically not charged for seeing one of our clinicians, except if they are considered a SCHN billable patient.

Patients referred from private sectors are considered a private patient and may be charged accordingly.
