Epilepsy medications

There are various types of medication used to treat epilepsy.

Talk to your healthcare team about the best treatment plan for your child.

Always ask your doctor before:

  • Changing medication or dosage
  • Stopping a medication
  • Changing brands

If your child has more seizures than usual, contact your doctor. Try to give the medications at approximately the same time each day. Always make sure you have enough medication and check the expiry date. Order a new prescription at least 2 weeks before you are due to run out.

In case of overdose or poisoning please contact the poisons information centre on 13 11 26.

Some side effects can occur when commencing a new medication and may be due to dosing. Speak to your doctor if your child has any notable side effects:

  • Upset tummy
  • Tiredness or sleepiness
  • Occasional poor coordination
