Live vaccines

Your child should not receive any live vaccines, such as the mumps, measles, rubella vaccine (MMR) or Varicella (chicken pox) vaccination while on treatment and for six months after completion of treatment.

Live vaccines can cause serious illness in children with decreased immunity. Most children can receive their scheduled vaccinations during their treatment (except live vaccines) but these should always be discussed with your oncologist.

After treatment

About six months following treatment, your child will receive a 'booster" or extra dose of basic immunisations. This will be done at a clinic visit.

Annual vaccination against Influenza is highly recommended for all children and their families.

Remember to always discuss any vaccination or immunisation for your child with your child's doctor before they are due.
