Surgery for cancer
Surgery will remove the tumour, but usually chemotherapy or radiotherapy is also used to kill any remaining cancer cells.
Different types of surgery are used to treat cancer. Most surgeries take place in the operating room under general anaesthesia.
The surgeon and the anaesthetist will discuss with you the type of surgery and the anaesthetic.
Primary surgery removes all or most of the tumour at the time of diagnosis.
Supportive care surgery is done to help your child with cancer treatments. For example, inserting a central venous line or portacath in a vein in the chest to take blood samples without a needle.
