Cancer handbook: Survivorship clinic, Randwick

You have graduated to survivorship clinic! Wait... what does this mean?

Once you have been told you are now in survivorship, a few things change.

We are no longer focused on looking for signs of disease recurrence.

There will be fewer visits to hospital, fewer blood tests and most scans and x -rays will stop.

You will continue to see your original consultant if you decide to make an appointment.

First visit

The first appointment will depend on what therapy you have received during treatment.

You may need a cardiac echo or a lung function test  or blood test. We will let you know before you attend the appointment.

We will do our best to complete all required follow up on the day of your appointment.

You will be given a summary of all your treatment and a schedule of recommended follow up.

Clinic times

Clinics are held twice a month on a Friday. Your consultant will not be available at each clinic day.

You may be told to make an appointment after 12 months. The appointment may be slightly earlier or later  based on your consultant's availability.

* This will be different for some children having follow up for brain tumours.

Referrals

You will need a GP referral to attend the Survivorship clinic.

You can ask your GP for an indefinite referral which will last for a few years.

We will not be able to make a booking for you without a GP referral.

If you change your doctor, or your doctor relocates their practice,  you will need to update your referral.

Outreach clinics

We do have survivorship appointments available at our outreach clinics. Please talk to your consultant or contact us.

Who do I call if I am unwell?

If you have a general illness, such as a respiratory or gastro infection, it is best to visit your doctor.

If you have concerns that the issue is related to your previous diagnosis or treatment,  you can call Karen or Rachael during business hours (contact details above this page).

Out of hours, call the hospital and ask for the oncologist on call.

If it is an emergency or life threatening, call 000.
